Living in the Word – Prayer Devotional for Comfort
Everyone has struggles, pains, and discomforts that they are trying to break free from or heal. As a Christian mental health therapist I see this daily in my office. But you can walk through your local grocery store and see the same kind of pain and struggles if your looking for it.
The world is hard. There is suffering and evil everywhere.
We can check out the latest book or read the latest blog post to learn something new. Most often our friends are available to support us and comfort us. Or we can seek out extra help. As a therapist, I can provide insight and another perspective. I can teach skills and uncover past wounds that are hindering progress. Together, my clients and I break down past faulty logic and false truths being believed. All of these things are valuable and are great options to utilize.
But none of these things can’t comfort in the way our Lord can. Only He knows the depth of your soul and every hurt in your heart.
I love the song Breathe by Jonny Diaz. Here is the chorus and the bridge:
Breathe, just breathe
Come and rest at My feet
And be, just be
Chaos calls but all you really need
Is to take it in fill your lungs
The Peace of God that overcomes
Just breathe
Let your weary spirit rest
Lay down what’s good and find what’s best
Just breathe
Only our God can provide that level of comfort and rest.
Take the time to read the below bible scriptures and truly focus on what they are saying to you. Some passages may touch you differently than others. Writing down the verses in your own hand is helpful for some individuals. Possibly looking up the verses in your own bible may be beneficial. I use a NIV bible translation. Or reading them over and over to commit to memory. Whatever method works best for you to experience God’s words and feel closer to Him.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell int eh house of the Lord forever.
Deuteronomy 32:10-12
In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 139:1-3
O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Psalm 139:9-10
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Psalm 73:23-24
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any posers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 10:27-29
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
Psalm 55:22
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
Psalm 30:4-5
Sing to the Lord, you saints of his; praise hi holy name. For his anger last only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Philippians 4:19
And my God will meet all our needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
I sincerely pray that these verses meet you where you are today. I don’t know what you have going on or what your struggles for today are, but our Heavenly Father does. He knows your heart and he knows what pains you. Our God wants to give you rest and comfort. Soak into the word and let it comfort you.
God bless,
Melissa
